FMCSA Says Size Does Matter

by al-whites-blog November 30, 2011

FMCSA sleep apnea standardsI found it puzzling to learn that the new FMCSA sleep apnea standards includes recommendations that only CDL holders with a body mass index of 30 or higher be referred for sleep apnea testing.

Granted, sleep apnea is a serious disorder that interrupts a person’s breathing during sleep, and I realize how serious that is. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly while sleeping. I get that. And it’s true that the lack of adequate and restful sleep can show itself during the day in various ways, putting people behind the wheels of automobiles in harms way.

They believe that certain physical features, such as excessive weight, are common to people with sleep apnea, although people who aren’t obese can suffer it as well. That’s what puzzles me about the FMCSA sleep apnea standards. A BMI of 30 or greater – 220 pounds for a 6-foot-tall person – puts people at risk for developing obesity-related medical conditions such as sleep apnea but how can they just select these people for testing and not everyone. Surely there are plenty of drivers who aren’t overweight that have OSA too.

The FMCSA sleep apnea standards support the belief that proper treatment of everyone with OSA will lead to significant health-care savings for trucking fleets. Even more importantly is that it will lead to a significant reduction in accidents and highway fatalities but only if all drivers are referred, not just a select group.

In Case of a Spill, Plug the Drains

by al-whites-blog October 29, 2011

We recently had an oil spill at my place of employment. We have a haz-mat team trained in how to deal with these issues directly but in general everyone has at least some training in spills. For instance, we know how to handle a spill in the immediate area of where we work. For me, I’m using liquids and there’s a drain near by. I know where the drain plugs are that is my first line of defense in the case of a spill — plug the drains.

Oil spills are hazardous to the health of people as well as to the environment. The hazards include fumes, ignitions, asphyxiation, burns, water contamination, soil contamination and fire. In case of an oil spill make sure you know what to do. Immediate measures can help the oil spill from spreading.

Emergencies can often be a confusing time. So to make it easier, they taught us to remember the 3 C’s of handling any accidental spills. These are control, contain, and clean up.

Here’s what to remember when you have to contain an oil spill:

1. If the oil or chemicals are near any type of drainage be sure to seal those with drain plugs.

2. Surround the oil spill with spill booms or socks. Enclose (ie. contain) the area of contamination.

3. Be sure you have secured all exit points for the spill.

Vegas wedding chapel

by al-whites-blog August 1, 2011

I am the envy of all my friends because my fiance and I planned our wedding ceremony at a Vegas wedding chapel. Some of them are coming no matter what it costs or takes for them to get there. Others just won’t be able to make the trip for any various number of reasons. I can’t imagine anything more important than a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Las Vegas, Nevada, to see your good friends get married.

They have all types of ideas for weddings and they like to hear any suggestions anyone else might have as well. Here’s some of the types of weddings that A Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas offers below. elevated platform

by al-whites-blog July 20, 2011

With just 4 components that Erectastep had in stock our company was able to make our production facility and warehouse 100% accessible 100% of the time. That is simply incredible! Many of our needs required stairs and a elevated platform configuration. They had that.

elevated platformThey have a large variety of aluminum stair and work platform components from which we could make unlimited configurations. The components consist of industrial handrails, universal work platforms, aluminum stairs, and tower platform supports. I’ll tell you a little about each one.

Industrial Handrails
The handrails are a single standard size and bolt to any elevated platform side through a matching bolt hole pattern. Each handrail is constructed out of round pipe with an outside dimension of just slightly less than 2”. Standard powder coat color is OSHA safety yellow to meet regulations.

Universal Work Platforms
ErectaStep’s universal 3’ x 3’ platform design is infinitely expandable through common bolt hole patterns. These bolt holes allow stairs, handrails and other platforms to be attached to any side. Each platform is stamped from a single piece of aluminum and features a slip resistant walk surface.

Aluminum Stairs
Industrial metal step unit offer 26” walk surface with slip resistant treads in 9” vertical increments (only) and will work with any elevated platform. ANSI Safety yellow powder coat is standard. Units ship broken down for lower sipping costs and are easy to assemble. Available in 11 different heights. Platform ladders in 11 different heights are now also available.

Tower Platform Supports
The tower support’s bolt hole configuration match the bolt holes on the Erectastep platform. This allows a tower attachment to span the seam of two platforms or to be located on as many as 4 sides of a single platform system regardless of stair location. Available in 11 different heights.

Cape May NJ Rentals

Cape May, NJ, is such a beautiful place to spend your vacation. The town itself is picturesque with streets lined with Victorian homes. The city has something to offer everyone with it’s multitude of activities and special events. Year-round, you can find entertainment, art shows, go boating, visit the Cape May County Zoo, and enjoy the beautiful natural environment by the sea.

If you’re looking for accommodations while here there are many Cape May NJ Rentals to available from which to choose. Whether you want a condo, townhouse, villa or waterfront house there are places available by the week, month, or season. I have found Cape May NJ Rentals to be comparable in price if not lower priced than other seaside communities when I’ve rented houses.

Cape May is a seaside resort drawing visitors from around the world. It was recognized as one of America’s top 10 beaches by the Travel Channel and rightfully so. Beautiful white sand beaches are kept meticulously clean. I highly recommend Cape May for your next vacation if you haven’t been there yet.

Folding wheelchair ramps

by al-whites-blog May 2, 2011

Folding wheelchair rampsWhen it comes to transporting wheelchairs and scooters, it’s important to choose ramps that have been specifically built for this purpose. Folding wheelchair ramps should be safety tested and be rated for a specific weight capacity.

Folding wheelchair ramps should be lightweight for easy handling. But it also has to be strong enough to hold a wheelchair or scooter, as well as the weight of the person in it, and possibly the weight of the person pushing the chair. Aluminum is strong and durable yet lightweight. Because wheelchair ramps need to be transported from place to place they fold conveniently.

Be sure the portable Folding wheelchair ramps you choose is wide enough to work with whatever wheel configuration the wheelchair or scooter has. The longer the ramp, the heavier it will be, so ramps are often designed to come apart into two separate sections, making them easier to use, carry, and store.

Aspen Colorado Lodging

by al-whites-blog April 22, 2011

Aspen Colorado Lodging

My wife and I planned a trip to Aspen for our 18th wedding anniversary this past February. We needed suggestions about Aspen Colorado Lodging, where to stay, etc., as we had no idea about the area. Living in the south and loving cold weather and snow, I’ve always dreamed of going somewhere, sitting in a lodge by a nice, warm fireplace and seeing nothing but snow!! We searched online for places to stay, and ultimately settled on the Aspen Highland Residence Club. We don’t ski, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t enjoy the snow! Of all places to stay in the town of Aspen, I do believe we found our own little piece of heaven right there. We both highly recommend this place!

My thoughts on Myrtle Beach SC foreclosures

by al-whites-blog October 28, 2009

This is a great time to buy property anywhere, but especially in Myrtle Beach SC.  Myrtle Beach SC foreclosures could give us the ability to get valuable real estate at a fraction of the traditional cost.  You can get great deals on real estate, such as water front houses and condominiums, beach front, condos, country properties, and much more!  In my opinion we shouldn’t miss this opportunity to get into our own Myrtle Beach property, it wont last so we need to get in on it now!
I deal with Weichert in Myrtle Beach and promised my agent I would give them a link back to their website in my comment so here it is: http://www.southern-coast.com  Myrtle Beach SC real estate

Here is one of my wife’s favorite recent Myrtle Beach photos.

I am considering going on a vacation in Lake Marion SC

by al-whites-blog October 28, 2009

We are currently searching for a nice, relaxing getaway for not a lot of money.  Checking out Lake Marion in the Lake Marion area of SC.  Looks like Clark’s Inn and Restaurant has some pretty good fishing and golf packages there.  They even have suites and a day spa. My coworker has been to Santee South Carolina  and say it is a true paradise.

Here’s a photo they sent from their last trip. Looks amazing there. They stayed at Clarks Inn too.
I couldn’t find them under Clarks Inn.com but when I looked up Santee wedding I found them there under a longer address. Looks pretty nice.
